Deaf Experience with Balance and Falls - Qualitative Study
What are your experiences with balance and falls? Janis Cole and Chiz Tamaki are interested in finding out what the experiences of Deaf individuals are as they get older. We are inviting you to tell us about what you know and what your experiences are with fall and fall risk.
Who can participate?
Deaf adults, 60 years or older.
Fluent in ASL.
Live in the community; not nursing home.
Able to walk independently for at least 20 feet.

What does participation look like?
There are two parts to the study. You may participate in one or both parts.
Part 1: Individual Interview (Currently Enrolling)
Participants with meet with the researcher for one-hour for an interview related to balance and fall experiences. The interview may happen via Zoom or in person, and will be video recorded.
Part 2: Focus Group Discussions (Note Yet Enrolling - Projected 2025-2026)
Later in the project, we will bring 4-5 people in a group to discuss strategies to improve balance and fall experiences of Deaf older adults. This discussion will be for about 2 hours. It may happen via Zoom or in person, and will be video recorded.​
