Activities Specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC)
The ABC was originally created by Powell and Myers in 1995. It is a tool to document confidence with balance in various situations. The full list consists of 16 items. There is a shorter, 4-item version, which can be used as a quick screening tool.
The ABC score is used by audiologists and physical therapists to determine if or what strategies are needed to support patient's balance and fall prevention efforts.
In our study, we determined that many deaf senior citizens who scored lower than 90% have a higher risk of falling than those who scored 90% or better.
Vestibular Disorders Activities of Daily Living Scale (VADL)
The VADL was originally developed by Cohen and Kimball in 2000. It is a tool to document how vestibular conditions are impacting patient's independence with activities of daily living.
Audiologists and physical therapists use this information to direct patient care and to determine if patients are improving.
Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI)
The DHI was originally developed by Jacobson and Newman in 1990. This tool is used to assess how the dizziness and balance problems impact the patient's functional, emotional, and physical aspects of life.
Fall Risk Questionnaire (FRQ)
The FRQ was originally developed by Rubenstein and colleagues in 2011. This scale was adapted to be an online survey in English and Spanish as Falls Free CheckUp through the National Council on Aging.
It helps you identify if you have a higher risk for falling and points you to resources for prevention.
